A Festive Evening at Ning Malaysian Restaurant

Christmas is just around the corner which can only mean one thing – food. Eat all the food you want without being judged, and what a way to celebrate Christmas early by sampling Nings’ Christmas menu. The three course banquet is priced at £28.95, with a selection of four choices available from each course.

Located in Northern Quarter away from the hustle and bustle, lies a small intimate Malaysian restaurant. The bold pink elegant setting incorporated with the black background made the ambience ‘sing’.

Upon arrival, we were greeted with Prosecco and handed over the Christmas menu, created by Chef Norman Musa, and oh what a delightful young chap he was. You can follow him over on Twitter (@NormanMusa) for all things Malaysian food related.
To begin with we had shots; Laksa shots – butternut squash, sweet potato with Laksa paste topped with crispy anchovies. It was something different which gave it the authentic touch. Green Chicken Skewers and the ‘Yee Sang’ seafood salad was also on the starters menu, along with the Venison Loh Kei Bak; white radish and carrot with pieces of venison wrapped in a deep fried tofu sheet.

Onto the mains, we tried the braised beef, infused with a selection of Malaysian herbs, it had a rich flavour to it so it might not be to everyone’s taste. The Cumin and Coriander Chicken was really tender and cooked to perfection (if you like mild spice, this is for you). You can also choose Prawn with Roasted Pineapple Rendang, a sweet and spicy dish stewed with coconut milk and spices. Last but not least my favourite, the Seared Seabass infused with turmeric, chilli, ginger and lemongrass sauce on a bed of kaffir lime leaves. The seabass was on point, delicate and moist with crispy skin. All mains come with Jasmine rice.


For dessert, you can choose a warm Christmas Pudding, Molten Chocolate, Fresh Fruits with Rose Jelly or Tai Tai with Mango and Coconut Jam (Malaysian Kaya Jam). If you want something different I’d recommend the Rose Jelly and Tai Tai.
