A trailblazing leader in the global festival calendar, Parklife 2023 returns in style this June – boasting another formidable lineup of the faces and voices driving modern culture. As the UK’s biggest metropolitan festival and a crowning moment in the summer festival season, Parklife’s commitment to festival sustainability and wider social responsibility continues to grow and grow, with the Parklife 2023 Green Pledge announced today setting Parklife 2023 apart as the most sustainable in the festival’s history.
Combining vital steps in order to combat the impact of climate change and the role that Parklife plays as a positive force for change and support within the local community – 2023’s Green Pledge ensures that festival-goers can celebrate one of the biggest weekends of the year whilst not only limiting effects on the environment but also giving back to vital courses and those less fortunate. A collaborative process, with the festival constantly looking for conversation with its loyal Parklife fans, its short-term and long-term goals all play a part in Parklife 2023.
After an incredible 2022, new steps for 2023 as a part of this year’s Green Pledge include:
- 8th Plate Initiative: All reusable food waste left at Parklife 2023 will be donated to Open Kitchen MCR, a local project in Manchester who utilise leftovers and food waste into sustainable meals for vulnerable people across the city
- Reduced Plastics: All water sold at Parklife 2023 will be provided via recyclable materials with no single-use plastics available on-site and reusable bottles encouraged throughout the weekend
- Food Vendors: Not only requiring compostable cutlery, plates and cups from all vendors – in 2023 each food vendor will be required to provide at least one Vegan food option on-site, reducing the consumption of meat/fish and unsustainable food options
- Clean Glitter: a festival sustainability challenge, the festival this year has announced dedicated environmentally-friendly glitter being available on-site and encouraged in advance
- The Big Green Coach: a 2023 partnership with the coach provider across the UK, who for every ticket purchased sponsors and protects 5 Square Feet of the Amazon Rainforest
These additional measures and steps compliment the bold steps that Parklife has made over the past few years when it comes to their Green Pledge. As the largest metropolitan festival in the UK, with a capacity of over 80,000 fans each day, Parklife work tirelessly to ensure that positivity and countless memories that come from the festival weekend are mirrored in its positive commitment to the environment both locally and wider. These include amongst many others:
- Over 50% Biofuel Powered: operating and utilising sustainable biofuel to power the vast productions and world that makes Parklife such a celebrated weekend, all powered by green sources.
- Public Transport Connections: strong encouragement of public transport use, with over 50% utilising local services and group transport to limit emissions and impact from travelling
- Cashless/Paperless Festival: Parklife acts as a 100% Cashless + Paperless festival, pushing digital technologies and eliminating environmental impact alongside criminal opportunities for a safer Parklife 2023 experience
Intrinsically tied to the city of Manchester, Parklife’s long-standing place at the heart of Manchester music culture is one built on positive impact. Whilst the festival may take place across one weekend, its role in supporting a vast array of organisations and projects across the Greater Manchester Area remains paramount – with over £300,000 raised within the Parklife Community Fund over the past 5 years alone. Working with local authorities in Manchester, Bury and Rochdale, the fund has helped supported a true range of orgnisations – from local youth clubs and football teams to mental health support services, community cinemas, school groups, environmental charities, local community groups and much more. Returning for 2023, the Parklife Community Fund continues to put the local area at the centre of everything Parklife represents.
Ensuring growth and development in the steps that all festivals should be making to leave positive impact and change, Parklife 2023’s Green Pledge serves as just the beginning for a prosperous future filled with countless festival memories and meaningful steps to a better planet.
