One of Manchester’s most iconic landmarks is set to welcome its first weddings in almost a decade, as couples race to book the city’s most romantic address.
The UK’s biggest heritage restoration project to date, Manchester Town Hall has been closed to the public since 2018 as it is brought back to its former glory. Now, as it enters the home stretch of its restoration, the treasured landmark is gearing up to kickstart weddings and corporate events from January 2028.
The Town Hall will reopen to the public in 2027, once work to repair and restore the Victorian masterpiece has been completed, under Manchester City Council’s ‘Our Town Hall Project’. First up will be a series of celebratory reopening events, and a phased approach will then allow the building and teams to be fully prepared to host commercial events again from 2028.
The Grade I-listed building has stood at the centre of civic life in the city since 1877 – a place to gather, celebrate, and connect. For generations, couples have exchanged their vows within its walls, which have witnessed generations of the city’s love stories.
As bookings officially open, couples are in with the chance of being one of the first to get married at the fairytale landmark’s restored event spaces after almost a decade.
Manchester Town Hall has long been a popular destination for those tying the knot – from its grand architecture and soaring stained glass windows, to sweeping staircases that offer the perfect ‘just married’ photo opportunities. This one-of-a-kind venue gives couples the opportunity to combine the romance and grandeur of a historic setting with the energy of a city-centre celebration. With the venue’s long-anticipated return on the horizon, couples can once more expect a big day that’s steeped in Manc history, with a range of packages on offer.
Each space within the venue’s walls tells its own unique story. The Great Hall is a magnificent setting with striking architectural character. Elsewhere, The Conference Hall, The Banqueting Hall, and The Reception Room offer equally characterful spaces, perfect for private dinners, ceremonies, or corporate events. The Lord Mayor’s Parlour is one of many settings overlooking Albert Square, while various elegant reception areas provide the perfect location for drinks and arrival moments. From the grandeur of The Great Hall to the character of the former Treasurer’s Office, every space is defined by rich architectural detail and remarkable heritage.
“Manchester Town Hall means so much to the city, and we can’t wait to help people make new memories in a building that already holds so many,” says Nick Harrison, General Manager of Manchester Town Hall. “The building has an identity that is inseparable from the city, and that gives an event here a very particular sense of place. For couples, there’s the opportunity to make their own history somewhere that is already part of the city’s story. For corporate clients, it offers a memorable setting with a strong Manchester connection. Our ambition is for the Town Hall to complement the city’s wider hospitality offer and give more people a reason to celebrate, meet and spend time here.”
Cllr Garry Bridges, Leader of Manchester City Council, comments: “Our Town Hall is a real Victorian masterpiece and we’re looking forward to sharing it with the public once again – lovingly repaired, restored and ready for another 150 years at the heart of Manchester. It’s a special building which belongs to the people and it’s great that they will be able to celebrate important landmarks in their lives, such as marriage, in its spectacular setting. The Town Hall is full of history. Here’s to many more stories being written within its walls.”
Manchester Central, the city’s internationally-renowned convention centre, which has been operating world-class events for 40 years, has been appointed by Manchester City Council to lead the events and weddings business at Manchester Town Hall, as well as the reintroduction of its beloved Sculpture Hall Café. The team is now taking enquiries for corporate events and wedding bookings for the newly restored Manchester Town Hall, with events taking place from January 2028.
