Christmas arrived early in Manchester as The Ivy Spinningfields unveiled a spectacular 39-foot-tall polar bear in the heart of Spinningfields last night, alongside a special charity pledge to Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.
Standing at almost 12 metres tall, the larger-than-life installation could be the world’s tallest polar bear sculpture, creating a striking seasonal landmark for visitors, shoppers and families throughout the Christmas season.
Beyond the festive spectacle, The Ivy Spinningfields marked the occasion with a special pledge to Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, donating 371 polar bear teddies, one to represent each of the hospital’s beds. The gesture aims to bring comfort and a little Christmas cheer to young patients who will be spending time in the hospital over the festive period.
The giant polar bear is expected to become a standout sight in Manchester, remaining in place throughout the festive season. To mark its unveiling, visitors enjoyed an evening of festive entertainment which included special performances, live music, and complimentary refreshments.

Following the big reveal, The Ivy Spinningfields has made 250 polar bear teddy bears available from a pop-up in Spinningfields Square today 27th October. Guests can take home their very own The Ivy Polar Bear teddy in exchange for a donation to Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. The initiative aims to support the hospital’s young patients and their families during what can be a particularly challenging time of year.
Lisa Biard, General Manager at The Ivy Spinningfields, said: “We wanted to create something special for Manchester this Christmas, bringing a little festive magic to the heart of the city. But beyond the spectacle, we also wanted to do something meaningful for our local community. Christmas can be particularly difficult for children and families spending time in hospital, and we hope that our donation of 371 polar bear teddies will bring a little comfort and joy to those who need it most. We’re incredibly excited to share this installation with Manchester and hope it brings a smile to everyone who visits.”
Angela Rowe, Deputy Director at Manchester Foundation Trust Charity, which supports Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, added: “We’re delighted to be working with The Ivy Spinningfields in the lead up to Christmas this year. We’re incredibly grateful for the donation of polar bear teddies for young patients at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, which will bring some extra comfort and Christmas cheer to children spending the festive season in hospital.
“The money raised from the polar bear teddies will also help make a lasting difference to our patients and their families – ensuring they receive the very best care in the very best facilities, not just at Christmas but all year round. Thank you to The Ivy Spinningfields and everyone who supports this wonderful initiative.”
The Ivy Spinningfields’ festive polar bear is located at The Pavilion, Byrom Street, Spinningfields, Manchester, M3 3HG.
